What are the General Instructions for Certification?
A certified document is one that has been signed and dated by a professional person or organization (e.g. solicitor, translation company) as a true copy or translation of the original.
Who can certify a document?
Your document must be certified by a professional person or someone well-respected in your community (‘of good standing’). You could ask the following if they offer this service:
· Lawyer/Solicitor/Barrister;
· Bank manager or official;
· Notary;
· Chartered accountant;
· Organization or authority that issued your original document;
· JOP(Justice of the Peace)/Magistrate
The person you ask should not be:
· Related to you
· Living at the same address
· In a relationship with you
How to certify a document?
Take the photocopied document and the original and ask the person to certify the copy by:
· Write ‘Certified to be a true copy/translation of the original seen by me’ on the document
· For photographic identity document(s) write “it is true likeness of the individual” on the document
· Sign and date the document
· Print their name under the signature
· Add their occupation, address (including country) and telephone number
